Helping bring over 100 unique beers to market in one year was just the start

There are breweries content to put out a couple of beers and call it a day. Not Pirate Life Brewing. Filled with ambitious, passionate and creative minds who love to explore every corner of the category, they celebrate how beer can bring people together when mixed with culture and third spaces.

As part of their in-house 3-person design team, I helped craft the brand's bold, art-driven presence across every possible touchpoint.

Sometimes that was helping design the unique identities, packaging and retail materials of the 100+ unique beers that were brought to market. Other times it was designing the signage for a music or beer festival, co-ordinating with printers to produce it, and then photographing the energy and excitement of the punters bringing the brand with them as they watched their favourite band.

I helped create point of sale assets for venues and stores, and re-branded the Port Adelaide venue's barbershop with a complete overhaul of signage and digital and physical assets, taking inspiration from the colour palette of the artwork painted on the walls.

Part of Pirate Life's appeal is the wide variety of styles and flavours they explore, with multiple-sized brewing setups available to them, which allows rapid development of new ideas.

The head brewer had the idea to explore a traditional Bavarian brewing method, single decoction, to create a highly drinkable, malt-forward beer. Sounds great - when is it being made? End of the week… not a lot of time.

Needing an identity fast, I had the Bavarian connection and a name for the beer. With very little time to get this to print, I iterated through ideas alongside the Head Brewer, settling on using elements from the Bavarian flag blowing in the wind to create a clean dual colour palette. The type used evoked old Germanic blackletter typefaces, which was finessed to keep everything exciting but still legible.

Finally, the labels were printed, tap decals were sent to venues and we shot the key visual which was used across socials and venue posters.

We sold out every can and keg.

A love of being social

Pirate Life is as much an events organiser as it is a brewery. Getting people together to share stories alongside food and drink is part of it's DNA. Over the course of my time at Pirate Life, I helped shape the visual narratives around these through artwork, signage and photography.

Bringing a brand to life

Photography

Whether through activations at festivals or a long afternoon of food and beer, the core essence of the brand is bringing people together. Photography needs to reflect this in every photo. I helped the brand capture those moments to help promote the brand, its values and its ever-changing lineup of products being cooked up.

Venue Signage

When the barbershop in the Port Adelaide venue was taken over by new hairdressers and barbers, I was given the opportunity to rebrand the venue. Moving away from the previous black and white colour palette, I took inspiration from the vivid blue and red artwork painted across the walls to build a fresh identity that was vibrant and fun.

Rebranded as the Pirate Life Parlour, the one-stop-shop for all things hair now included services for women and an expanded range of hair care products (including custom labels for beard oils inspired by core PL beers).

Co-ordinating with the crew, I managed the social account, creating a connected design spanning across tiles (in a time before Instagram loved shaking up the feed). I also handled all photography, becoming the one-stop-shop for their marketing.
